Why?
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, applies to the online collection of personal information from children under the age of 13. The rules define what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children’s privacy and safety online.
I created this to help people understand the human aspect of verifiable parental consent. I had already created process flows, wireframes, and an interactive prototype to document/demonstrate the functionality but really wanted them to realize they are dealing with actual children and not just actors in a use case. Empathy toward users, especially when it involves protecting children, is obviously very important.
How?
First I read everything I could find online about COPPA and verifiable parental consent. I also had a conversation with a lawyer to get her take on COPPA. Once I had all of this legal minutia in my head I put pencil to paper.
I tend to draw very loose at first and just rough in the general composition for each frame. I add detail gradually and try not to spend too much time on any specific element. I also only draw just what is needed for each unique element since I duplicate and manipulate elements once in Photoshop.
When the initial drawing is complete, I scan it into Photoshop. I duplicate characters and elements needed for each frame and manipulate as needed to get placement and perspective right. I also create any elements that weren’t drawn (e.g. a generic computer screen element I used to add in screenshots from the prototype).
After each of the frames is close to what I want I merge all of the various drawing layers into one and clean up rough/stray pencil lines via layer masks. I prefer to maintain a sketch-like quality to these so I tend to leave in a lot of the little imperfections. Once this cleanup is complete I adjust the contrast to make the lines darker and the smudges a little less evident.
Inking is accomplishing by setting the drawing layer to Multiply and adding color for each element underneath (e.g. skin, clothing, hair, etc.) This helps preserve the sketch-like nature of the drawing without having to go in and erase all of the white space. When inking is complete, I merge the drawing and ink layers into one for a little bit of final cleanup.
So What?
This deliverable currently serves as a reference piece since we haven’t implemented this functionality yet. Once we start coding the parental verification process, it will serve as a guideline for what the user experience should be like. A lesson I’ve learned is that once you do something like this people want more of them. They definitely stand out from process flows and other boxy deliverables (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
