Persona Spectrum Board
Why?
Emotions run much stronger reacting to visuals than words or demographic stats. And it’s much harder to look someone in the face and tell them you don’t want to talk to them than to dismiss a whole demographic group from your customer base. So, we created a wall-sized photo collage to stimulate debate around diversity within a client persona creation workshop.
How?
- Collected royalty free photos potentially representing a broad cross-section of potential audiences
- Arranged photos into collage roughly organized as a spectrum of age, gender, ethnicity, class, etc.
- Printed collage on sturdy wall-sized paper
- Instructed clients to spend 5 minutes placing green dots on faces who were definitely their customers, 5 minutes placing red dots on faces who were definitely NOT their customers and 5 minutes placing yellow dots on faces who aren’t their customers today but could be some day soon… then gave them 5 minutes to change their minds by covering up their own dots or those placed by others
- Lead discussion between each round of dot placement
So What?
Games are great for stimulating debate and the wall-sized version makes a lovely office decoration immediately bringing to mind the conversations and realizations this exercise inspired during persona creation.

I really enjoyed reading this and think it’s a great way to make a task entertaining for a group – as an ice breaker especially
